Operation Procedure - Laser Cutter #LC-2

Purpose This procedure describes operation of the 60W laser cutter, #LC-2
Safety Zone Orientation shall be completed prior to operating the equipment.

Completing an introductory laser cutting class is recommended for those who have not used a laser cutter before. Follow safety instructions posted on the equipment. Required PPE: None

Materials/Tools
  1. Focus Gauge
  2. Dust pan and brush

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Step Description Image
1 Know the material you are using.
Open the MATERIALS section in the binder.

- Verify the material is not on the “Prohibited” list. - Verify the material is on the “Approved” list.

2 Know the thickness of your material.

Open the MATERIALS section in the binder. - Check the Common Settings for your material. - Determine the settings to use on test cuts. - Perform test cuts before performing your final output.

START UP

- Step Description Image
1 Verify Laser Switch is OFF.
2 Verify Emergency Stop buttons are out. Twist clockwise.
3 Verify chiller switch is ON.
4 Turn wall switch ON.
5 Turn control switch ON.
6 Wait for laser head to find “home” position.

- Note: Red light is NOT the laser. It is a guide showing where the laser will contact. The laser is invisible.

7 Turn Water Pump/Air Pump switch ON.
-	Chiller will beep loudly for a few seconds, until water starts flowing. “Normal” light will illuminate.
8 Verify compressed air is flowing. Place a piece of paper under the nozzle. Check for movement
9 Place material on the bed. Position starting at the back left corner.
Use the arrow keys to move the Laser Head to the back left corner of your material. Ensure Auto Focus sensor is over the material.
10 AUTO FOCUS

- Press “Z/U” - Use arrow keys to scroll down to “Auto Focus” - Press “Enter

11 MANUAL FOCUS

- Place focus gauge on top of material. - Press “Z/U”. “Z Move” should be highlighted. - Use LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys to move bed up or down. - Adjust bed height so that the focus gauge just fits between the material and the lens (focal point is just below surface of material). Press ESC.

12 Close the cover.
13 Turn the Laser Switch On
14 Turn the Potentiometer fully Clockwise

PERFORMING A TEST CUT

- Step Description Image
1 Open RDWorks.
2 Draw a 1” circle. COPY and PASTE the circle.
3 Select one circle. Click on a color to assign that circle to a new layer.
4 Select both circles. Click CENTER VERTICAL and CENTER HORIZONTAL to overlay the circles.
5 Double click on a layer.
6 Select MODE. Use SCAN for engraving, CUT for cutting.
7 Refer to “Materials” section for guidelines on optimal settings for cutting and etching various materials.
8 Adjust SPEED.
9 Adjust POWER.

- Measured in %.

10 Verify IS OUTPUT and IF BLOWING are YES.
11 Note the location of the GREEN DOT. This is the laser’s starting position. (Typically, the top-left corner of the image)

- Verify the circles will fit on the material. - If necessary, move the laser head with the arrow keys on the machine so that the image will fit on the material.

12 Click START to begin cutting operation
13 If power output is too high, reduce power by turning the Potentiometer counterclockwise.
14 When work is finished, turn “Laser Switch” OFF.
15 Before opening lid, wait 30 seconds after work is finished to allow all fumes to vent out.
16 Inspect completed test pieces. Adjust SPEED and POWER parameters until the desired material output is achieved.

CUTTING ETCHING

- Step Description Image
1 Open RDWorks.
2 Load file (.DXF or .AI7) into RDWorks.

- FILE > IMPORT - Vector files are best (.DXF or AI7). - Other file types may work, but may require modification.

3 If necessary, adjust size of design.

- Select entire image - Click LOCK icon so that it displays locked (aspect ratio is locked) - Change WIDTH or HEIGHT dimension

4 Organize design into separate layers. Different settings can be applied to each layer.

- SHIFT+Click to select lines that will have the same laser speed and power settings. - Click on a layer color. - Each color can be assigned different laser speed and power settings.
